A brief history

At the end of the 13th century the area of Thorpe Thewles on which the pub lies was granted to the church to be “kept in perpetual alms for the support of hospitality”. The pub had many proprietors back then until the Viscount of Boyne bought it from the Marchioness of Londonderry.

The pub and it's surrounding land were moved into the estate of Lord Boyne and this is how the pub got it’s name...

  • 1828 - Emma Maria Russell married Gustavus Hamilton.
  • 1830 - They had a son, Gustavus Russell.
  • 1850 - Emma's brother, William Russell Esq. died, without an aire and the estate passed to Emma & Gustavus Russell, who became the 8th viscount of Boyne. He and his wife assumed the name Hamilton Russell and the arms of Russell.
  • 1907 - The Rt. Hon. Gustavus William Hamiton Russell succeeded his father.
  • 1922 - Scottish & Newcastle breweries purchased the pub from him.
